Feeding Discipline for Huskies

For this training session, you are going to need:

  • Your husky food
  • Food bowl

When it is time to feed your husky, take their food bowl where you keep the food bag or container. Allow your husky to follow you and look at what you are doing. You will tell your husky to sit and wait for you to approach the food bag.

Getting the food ready

Continue removing the food from the container and putting it in your husky bowl. If your husky breaks the sit at any moment, you will calmly ask to sit back again. Keep repeating this process until your husky can remain seated, waiting for you to get the food.

Giving any food as a reward for sitting is not advisable because this exercise builds discipline and patience. They will eventually get the entire bowl of food, but they must patiently wait for it.

Feeding at the crated playpen area

The next step is to go to the area where you set up the crated playpen and select a spot that you will always use to put the food bowl. Always use the same spot because it helps your husky associate that section as a place to find the good stuff.

Once in that area, you will ask your husky to go down to a down position. While in the down position, you will put its food bowl on the floor and closely monitor what your husky is doing. Your husky should patiently wait for your command to get the food.

Husky went to the bowl without permission

If they break the down command to get to their food, you will block your husky from the food bowl with your body. You will remain silent without allowing your husky to reach the food bowl.

Do not pick up the food bowl. Leave it exactly where you put it.

Eventually, your husky will stop trying to get the food bowl and sit or lie down. The goal is for your husky to stay lying down while looking at the food bowl, but without going for it.

Increasing the distance

Now, you will step back a few steps and watch if your husky gets up from the down position to get to their food. If your husky gets up from the down position, you will block them with your body and gently direct them to their original position.

You must do this quickly, ensuring your husky does not reach the bowl. Continue with stepping back a few feet and waiting. Keep blocking your husky with your body as many times as you need and keep repeating until your husky starts lying down without attempting to reach food.

Ready, GO! Eat!

When your husky stops trying to reach the food bowl, you will tell them, “GO,” allowing your husky to eat their food. Once they are eating, do not interrupt them. Let them eat in peace.

You will repeat this training exercise every time you feed your husky. Always feed your husky by doing this exercise for as long as you have your fantastic husky in your life.

The goal is a disciplined husky

What this exercise does is create discipline and patience. The husky must wait for your "GO" command if they want to eat.

From now on, your husky will only eat after you allow it. As you continue exercising, keep increasing your distance from the food bowl. At some point, you can walk away anywhere, and your husky will wait for your “Go" command before eating.

Do not pick up the bowl

If you increase your distance from the bowl and your husky breaks from the down command and reaches the howl, simply walk to your husky and push them away with your body. Whatever you do, do not pick up the food bowl.

Not picking up the food bowl is because your husky will directly associate you with the one who took away their food. If you push the husky away from the bowl with your body, your husky will still see the bowl in the same place but will learn that they first need your permission with the “GO" command to reach the food.

Use your body to block the bowl

If you have difficulty keeping your husky away from the food bowl, you can use the slip leash to pull them away gently. However, it is best to use anything else you have around, such as walls, to block the food bowl and use your body to block the path. Keep doing this exercise every day because it will bring you fantastic results.
