Why I started Husky Trainers

I’m Luis Maymi, and Husky Trainers is a passion project I started after I got my first dog in February 2022. He is a purebred Siberian Husky that I got as a two-month puppy, and his name is “Piña Colada” (named after a cocktail drink from Puerto Rico).

Piña taught me much about myself and has pushed my immense patience to the limit. But he also brought something I was not expecting: a passion for dog training. However, he did not bring that passion for dog training by himself because, before Piña, there was a five-pound Yorkie named Louie.

A dog training passion inspired by a five-pound Yorkie

I met Louie in 2020 (he was two years old then) when I was dating my fantastic girlfriend, Amanda. This tiny Yorkie was a force to be reckoned with. He was very aggressive and bit me many times, truly ferocious for such a small thing. I wanted to win Louie's trust, and I wanted him to like me, so I immersed myself in learning about dog training.

With Louie as my “practice dummy,” I trained him so well that all his aggression was gone, and now he is the most amazing Yorkie ever. Above all, he loves me more than my girlfriend (his original owner).

Then, two years later, I brought a purebred Siberian Husky to our lives and holy lord, he was a whole different training level than the Yorkie. Training my husky Piña since he was two months old was tough, and he forced me to research more advanced dog training techniques to ensure that he grew into an incredibly well-trained dog.

Even though I made many mistakes training my husky, I can confidently say that I raised and trained that little monster into an incredibly well-behaved Husky. My husky is so well trained that he does therapy dog shows at assisted living facilities with me. I can take him to work without causing chaos, and he is perfectly trained off-leash.

After this fantastic experience with two considerably different-sized dogs, I found that I love the feeling of training dogs and want to explore this world even more.

First Mission

I hope that Husky Trainers becomes the “go-to” dog training educational site for husky pet parents who are going crazy dealing with their huskies. Sadly, huskies are surrendered to shelters at an alarming rate, and most of the time, it is because of irresponsible owners who only got the breed because they look majestic but failed to research the training requirements and their living conditions.

Husky Trainers is my way of extending my knowledge and hopefully providing huskies with well-trained owners who can handle their husky craziness.

Second Mission

It is a rewarding experience doing what I call a therapy dog show event at assisted living facilities. The therapy dog show is a dog trick show where my Husky Piña, my Yorkie Louie, and I perform for older adults at assisted living facilities.

That is why my second mission at Husky Trainers is to give our show to as many assisted living facilities as possible and give happiness to people who, most times, live in depression and loneliness. I’m so excited to bring joy and happiness to my team of dogs.

What can Husky Trainers do for you?

What do Husky Trainers NOT do?

I do not do “Board & Train,” and it is not something I will ever implement at Husky Trainers. My goal is for Husky Trainers to be an educational resource that focuses on training you to become a “Husky Trainer” yourself.

To me, you should do everything you can to train your husky by yourself and build a strong bond together. I believe it is a financial privilege to drop your husky to someone else to train instead of taking the total toll of the training (unless you are looking for a service dog or protection dog).

Still, if you need “Board and Train” services, click here for a list of professional dog trainers that offer them.

My biggest dream for the future of Husky Trainers?

Without any doubt, the biggest dream for me with Husky Trainers is to create “Private Dog Parks” across the United States. The “Private Dog Parks” will be beautiful places for pet parents to take their dogs to play and make friends safely. I am firmly against public dog parks because most are dangerous, potentially deadly, and with incredibly nasty dog owners.

I dream that our private dog park will be 100% safe and respectful and staffed with professional dog trainers, groomers, veterinarians, and food trucks.
