At Husky Trainers, we firmly believe you should only buy an e-collar if you adequately prepare your husky. You can severely damage your relationship with your Siberian Husky if you misuse the e-collar. We are firmly against husky owners irresponsibly getting and "shocking" their huskies just because they misbehave.
In our ecollar training course, you follow twenty steps to successfully and safely train yourself and your husky to use the device. But how exactly can you determine if your husky is ready for the e-collar? In this article, we will provide you with a straightforward exercise you can practice with your husky that will immediately reveal to you if your husky is ready or not ready for the "shock collar".
Setting up the dog training exercise for e-collar use
The first thing you will do is get the tools needed for the training exercise. Here is what you need:
- A door that leads outside
- Chair
- Leash
Now, set up the chair near the door in a spot you can easily open while keeping your husky close. Now put your husky collar (we prefer the martingale collar) on its leash and sit on the chair you set up near the door. Continue by opening the door entirely and see what your husky does.
Scenario 1: Your husky bashes out the door
If your husky bashes out the door and continuously pulls, desperately trying to get out, and you cannot get your husky under control, then your husky is not ready for the e-collar.
If anyone tells you to go buy an e-collar to "correct" this bad behavior and to "shock" your poor husky until they comply, we will immediately tell you that it is the wrong thing to do. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.
The e-collar is a tool to reinforce good behavior that your husky learned via other training methods. In this case, you are teaching your husky the "Doorway Training Method," which we discussed in detail in Step 9 of our "Training Siberian Huskies with E-collar'' training series.
Note that in our training course, we are teaching the husky the door method on step nine, and it is not until step 16 that we start using the e-collar. The e-collar is a tool that, if misused, will damage your relationship with your husky and must be used responsibly. However, that does not mean you should never use it with your husky. Following the training exercise, if your husky does the following, they are ready for e-collar.
Scenario 2 - Husky stays by the door waiting for your command to go out
If after you open the door, your husky stays put with the door wide open without attempting to get out and without pulling the leash, then your husky is ready for the e-collar.
Your husky should be trained to wait for your command to get out before leaving alone. You should be able to stand from your chair, drop the leash, walk around, and come back, and your husky should still be waiting for you. If your husky goes out the door, you should be able to recall them, and they should come back without needing to use the e-collar.
The e-collar comes in situations where your husky completely loses focus and decides to ignore you altogether. For example, in this scenario where you left the door open, let's say that your husky is patiently waiting for your command to go out when they suddenly see a squirrel, another dog, or a person they like, and they bash out the door. If you try recalling them, but your husky ignores you, you are justified to use the e-collar to recall them back to their original position by the door.
Using the e-collar in this scenario is okay because you previously taught your husky about the consequences of bashing out the door. Once you activate the stimulation or vibration from the e-collar, they will know how to eliminate the e-collar sensation (by returning to their original position by the door. Back to you). We teach you how to get this fantastic behavior on Step 9 - Doorway Training Method on our "Training Siberian Huskies with E-collar'' training series.
It takes time to teach a husky to get used to the e-collar
If your husky passes scenario 2 (waits for your command to go out the door), then your husky is ahead of all other huskies in scenario 1 (bashes out the door). However, it is still a process to properly introduce the e-collar to a husky and much more work if you want to have an off-leash husky with a near-perfect recall command.
We invite you to try the exercise above to see which scenario your husky falls into, and when ready, you and your husky can start on "Step 0 - Why train a Husky with E-collar?" of our e-collar course. By step twenty, your husky will be successfully off-leash and with an excellent recall.
