A veterinarian's job is to ensure your dog has no underlying health issues that could make them sick. Since the veterinarian's goal is to provide the best health for your dog, when the topic of an e-collar or shock collar is involved, their primary understanding of these collars is that they are inhumane. The veterinarian focuses on the anatomy and physiology of dogs. Since they come from the medical field, most lack first-hand experience with dog training, especially e-collar dog training.
Dog owners want to value the opinion of their veterinarians. However, if the consensus is that e-collars are inhumane, does that mean your veterinarian should shame you for using an e collar? Sadly, in a society overwhelmed by "positive-only dog trainers," it can be a business risk for a veterinarian to come out publicly to support using e-collars.
To keep their clientele of overly emotional pet parents, it is "best for businesses" to go against ecollar use.
The Massive Misconception of E-collar Use
The problem with the people against using remote training collar is that they base their judgment solely on their "emotions" and then reinforce it with "academic studies" that they most likely only read as far as the headline or summary. They judge the e-collar based on how they "feel about it" instead of learning how to use the e-collar for each dog properly. They feel personally attacked by the e-collar training method because their dogs "feel pain" and "feel discomfort." In their mind, their dogs cannot get any negativity or punishment in any way.
They are so afraid of hurting their dog's "feelings" that they never attempt to learn the proper use of the e-collar because "science" and their veterinarian say it is evil. Although these people (also known as "positive only dog trainers") will refuse the e-collar in its entirety, Another group of people (inexperienced dog owners) use the e-collar out of desperation.
This misuse indeed causes problems in the dogs.
E-collar requires time to master
The biggest issue giving e-collars a bad reputation is that inexperienced pet parents don't spend the appropriate amount of time learning how to use them properly. For example, let's say a pet parent is frustrated with their husky running away and not following basic commands.
In that frustration, they buy an e-collar, put it on their husky, and shock them every time the husky does not comply with their orders.
That way of using the e-collar is very damaging for the husky.
Under those circumstances, it will contribute to fear, pain, aggression, panic, and stress. That is why in our FREE Training Siberian Husky with E-collar course, you and your husky need to complete 15 training lessons before using the e-collar stimulus.
Never teach your husky new commands with an e-collar
Properly using an e-collar requires first teaching commands with leashes, collars, or any other available tools. Only after your husky masters the commands can you use the e-collar stimulation. This is because your husky must first learn the commands you want to teach and then use the e-collar to allow your husky to be safely off-leash.
The e-collar should be used almost exclusively for the recall command to immediately call your husky back to you when there is potential danger around them or when the husky could potentially kill wildlife or hurt another dog or a person.
You only provide the e-collar stimulus or vibration correction if the husky does not stop after your verbal correction. The e-collar acts as an "insurance policy" you never want to use, but you will be glad you had it in an emergency.
Huskies are ruined because they have yet to be trained
Huskies are one of the most abandoned breeds at shelters, mainly because they overwhelm their owner with their intense and highly independent nature. Huskies are not easy to train, but if you decide to get one, you must train them correctly. As part of that training, you can introduce the e-collar following a step-by-step process, but it will take you time and effort to get good results.
Not training your husky correctly will ruin your dog, and then (like an alarming amount of irresponsible husky owners) you will justify rehoming it because "they need a better home because you can't provide it."
If you are not committed to training your husky, you should refrain from using an e-collar to make them comply with you.
